Character Analysis: Shang-Chi

 

Background


Shang-Chi was created as the perfect living weapon by his criminal warlord father, Zheng Zu, in his plans for world domination upon witnessing the supposed death of his mother - Jiang Li which cut any shreds of humanity he had left. Shang-Chi spent his childhood honing his mind and body to peak condition to serve his father in any way he could, believing him to be an honorable and loving man. However, Shang learns his father's true nature after he was given an assassination mission against an innocent man, leading him to leave his father and fight against his nefarious ways. Fighting him and his empire in a span of a decade.


And after defeating many of the warriors and assassins sent by his father to kill him. Shang-Chi had finally confronted his father one last time and was able to defeat him once and for all. Upon his father's death, Shang would soon reunite with his long lost siblings and mother as well as gather the soldiers once loyal to his father and became their Supreme Commander of The Five Weapons Society, as they vowed to reform it into an organization that fought for peace. However this led them into conflict with the rest of the Marvel Universe's heroes because of the dark history of their father's organization which led Shang-Chi's honor and loyalty being tested between his duties in fulfilling his father's legacy as their leader or helping his closest friends in the superhero community.


But soon enough a threat would arrive upon their doorsteps who was revealed to be none other then his grandfather - Chieftain Xin the father of Jiang Li, his mother; an old sworn enemy of his father. Xin and his army of Ta-Lo prepared for a full on invasion of earth not only for conquest, but also exact his revenge on Zheng Zu and destroy everything he had every built. However his plans was stopped by Shang-Chi, his siblings and the Five Weapon Society proving to the world that the Five Weapon Society could be used as a force for good and that Shang-Chi was still on the side of justice.



Equipment

The Eighteen Arms of Wushu


As a martial arts master and trained assassin. Shang-Chi was taught to become proficient in all sorts of traditional Chinese martial arts weaponry such as Swords, Knives, Polearms, Staves, Flails and Throwing Projectiles. As such these weapons were made of Adamantium which are more than strong enough to damage and shred through Iron Man’s armor. 


 Ceremonial Gauntlet 

A ceremonial arm band which Shang-Chi wears on both of his arms. They aren’t just ordinary gauntlets however as they’re sturdy enough to block melee weapons and deflect projectiles such as bullets, knives, shurikens, energy blasts, and even Iron Man’s Repulsor Blasts


The Ten Rings


The Ten Rings were a set of ten mystical iron rings originating from Ta-Lo that were acquired by Shang-Chi which were once wielded by the legendary Chinese deity - Nezha and were stated to be a “universe” ring weapon. With it; the rings greatly enhance his physicality to a greater degree as well allow him to conjure weapons such as energy blasts, homing missiles, whips, shields as well as the ability to fly and manipulate the size of the rings in order to ensnare or strangle his enemies, and more recently it is shown the ability to create spatial wormholes to summon other worldly creatures to battle or to banish foes. The extent of how powerful these Ten Rings is unclear, but have been said to grant the wielder power that can rival that of the Infinity Stone. The Ten Rings can only be wielded by Shang-Chi himself and if any other attempt to try and wear it, the rings will either fight back or attempt to kill those who are unworthy to wield it. 


Abilities

Master Martial Artist

Having been trained since birth by his father - Zheng Zu into being the ultimate warrior and assassin. Shang-Chi was trained in all forms of martial arts styles which has made him the undisputed deadliest hands in all of Kung Fu. Because of this, he has been shown to be skilled in reading his opponent to predict their next move even before they happen or utilize pressure point and nerve strike techniques which can either incapacitate or kill an opponent, being strong enough to even completely paralyze the Thing’s arm. 

Weapon Proficiency 

Being an assassin trained from birth by his father. Shang has trained in all sorts of close range and long range weapons whether it would be swords, knives, staves, flails and throwing weapons as well as being able to turn ordinary mundane objects into improvised weapons. 

Stealth Master

Being both a trained assassin and MI-6 operative. Shang-Chi is more than skilled enough to sneak into highly guarded places undetected and sneak up on even the likes of Captain America and Sharon Rogers.  

Enhanced Senses

Shang-Chi’s senses are enhanced to a superhuman level. To the point where it allows him to detect and predict all sorts of danger that can warn him of incoming enemy actions/attacks, surprise attacks or dangerous situations. His senses have also been proven to be potent enough to allow him to fight Gorgon while in complete darkness or detect even Jean Grey - one of the most powerful psychics and telepaths of the X-Men despite her masking the X-Men and her own presence from him.  

Chi Manipulation


With this ability. Shang-Chi is able to greatly enhance his physicality and senses to superhuman levels performing astonishing feats like sensing the presence of others and who the individual’s true self as well as conjuring energy blasts and even sending Red Hulk flying with a kick.

Shang-Chi has no particularly exploitable weaknesses, but as skilled and deadly of a fighter and assassin that he is. He is by no means invincible and is still a mortal man that can still die by conventional means. Also if he uses the full extent of the Ten Rings powers for too long there is a possible chance of him becoming corrupted by his father’s evil influence.
